MY&PBC COMMODORE’S
CUP VANE “M” WEEKEND
29TH &
30TH OCTOBER 2011
There was a 6-boat entry for the Commodore’s Cup weekend
this year, which was a significant improvement on the last 3 years. We were
also pleased to welcome some new volunteers to help on the “Mates’ Bank”. Sam
Butler had enjoyed sailing with his father, Graham, when they finished 2nd
in the recent Vane “A” Class National Championship at the Centenary
Celebrations, and was keen to maintain his interest in vane sailing. Jim Lydon
has also rejoined the Club after several years’ absence and wanted to try his
hand at this side of the sport. In addition, Vic Applegate, from Bournville
came to sail with Lisa McKerchar and we were pleased to see Bill Green, no
longer the owner of a modern vane “M” flying machine, sailing with Damian
Ackroyd, who is now the new owner of Bill’s former Starkers designed “Added
Interest”.
First thing on Saturday morning Alan and David Bell were
anxiously checking the depth of water at the edge of the lake, as they had both
recently purchased maximum depth fins and “Starkers” type leads for their
yachts. David was to sail the Chris Dicks designed “Mistake”, which he had also
modified by reducing the beam by around 2”. Alan was to try the new fin and
lead on his trusty old Swag. Although the water was about 6” below the walkway
their yachts did not run aground during the weekend.
Racing commenced at 11-00 hrs with Eric Watkinson as Race
Officer. The wind was southerly, not the favourite direction for Fleetwood Lake,
as this gave more or less a broad reach both ways down the lake. Some yachts
were using “A” rigs and some were in “B”, as there were some strong gusts. Not
every skipper had a mate, so competitors looked after each other to ensure that
no yachts were in danger of hitting the bank. A full round was completed and
skippers were happy to continue sailing until 4-00 pm; by which time 2 extra
heats were sailed. Results were as follows:

On Saturday evening some of the competitors checked out the
delights of a selection of the local hostelries, including the Strawberry
Gardens on Poulton Road, which has recently been bought by the Fuzzy Duck
microbrewery and reopened as a Real Ale bar. This was followed by a walk around
the corner to the Mount Hotel for a steak supper. Thank goodness the clocks
were put back overnight!
Racing recommenced at 10-00 am on Sunday morning with Eric
again in charge. The wind direction was similar to the previous day, but much
lighter, so everyone was in “A” rig. After lunch the wind shifted slightly to
the S.W., giving a close-hauled long leg and a couple of guys out from the
Clubhouse end of the lake. The final heat was completed in almost flat calm
conditions. No skipper had got away unscathed this day, as there were only 4
points difference between top and bottom boats! Results were as follows:

FMY&PBC BRADFORD CUP & JIM ROSE BOWL VANE “A” 03.09.11
Due to having only 4 entries it was decided to race for both
trophies that day rather than spread over two days.
The wind was a moderate top suit from the S.W. giving
reaching conditions.
There was a shortage of mates, so one pair was sailed both
ways, with the skippers of the second pair acting as mates, and then the roles
were reversed to sail the second pair to complete the heat.

CLASSIC & VINTAGE VANE “M” CLASS WEEKEND
Fleetwood MY&PBC held a weekend of Classic and Vintage
Vane “M” Class racing, on Saturday and Sunday 7th & 8th
May 2011. A record entry of 9 yachts for this event assembled to compete for
the array of silverware. For the purpose of this competition we defined
“Vintage” as the yachts designed at the inception of the “M” Class in the early
1930’s, through to the late 1960’s. During this period it was a class rule that
the circumference of a 2” disc must fit between the hull and the garboard. “Classic” covered early fin and bulb designs
up to circa 1980.
We were again delighted to welcome Tom MacBeath and Hughie
Shields from Scotland. Tom brought his two vintage yachts, “Maireaid”, a Witty
“Manta” design and “Solveig”, a MacDonald “Saida”. On the first day Tom sailed
“Maireaid” and lent “Solveig” to MYA President, Derek Priestley. Hughie sailed
“Ragtime”, a vintage yacht originally first registered in Scotland, but
unfortunately the details had been lost. Bournville Club were well represented
with 3 entries. These included the famous “Gigi”, designed and built by Adams
to his “Foxtrot” design, originally owned by Len Maskell of Leeds &
Bradford Club, but now lovingly restored, owned and sailed by Graham Reeves. Bill
Green had brought “Sula”, a Bill Sykes designed yacht from the 1970’s and Lisa
McKerchar sailed “Risky”, a “Nike” design by Dunling, beautifully built in wood
using the plank on frame technique.
Alan Bell again sailed “Tempest”, a “Foxtrot” design, John
Brooks borrowed Eric Watkinson’s “Blue Peter”, a Stollery “Blood Axe” design
and Peter Whiteside sailed “Bosun’s Mate”, a Witty “Bosun” design. “Sula”,
“Blue Peter” and “Risky” were regarded as “Classic” designs with the remainder
of the fleet falling into the “Vintage” category.
Racing commenced at 10-30 am under the watchful eye of Race
Officer, Eric Watkinson. The wind strength was a heavy top suit, blowing from
the S.E., giving reaching conditions. There was light rain from around midday
for a couple of hours, then the sun came out. Unfortunately there was a
shortage of mates, so the bye boat skipper took the mate’s bank and the other
skippers helped each other as required. This slowed down the proceedings, but
it meant that all sailors and yachts were not put in danger. Six heats were
sailed and results declared on a percentage basis, as some yachts had had a
bye.
Final Scores
“Solveig” Derek
Priestley Fleetwood 80% Top
“Vintage”
“Risky” Lisa
McKerchar Bournville 80% Top
“Classic”
“Tempest” Alan
Bell Fleetwood 72%

Reeves Bournville 43%
“Ragtime” Hughie
Shields Greenock 32%
“Bosun’s Mate” Peter
Whiteside Fleetwood 30%
“Maireaid” Tom
MacBeath Fleetwood 12%
The Walter Jones Trophy was awarded to Derek Priestley and
the Mayoral Cup to Lisa McKerchar.
After racing most of the competitors went for a meal and a
drink at the North Euston Hotel and a very pleasant time was had.
On Sunday morning the wind strength was similar to the
previous day but the direction had changed to the S.W.; still reaching
conditions. The fleet was reduced in number to 7 yachts, as Derek was not
available and Hughie and Tom decided to sail “Solveig” together. Tom offered
“Maireaid” to Lisa, which she was happy to sail.
Eric Watkinson again ran the proceedings.
For a short while the wind changed to westerly, giving a
3-leg beat to windward, but later reverted to S.W. reaching conditions. Heavy
rain arrived around midday and then it brightened up. A full round was sailed
and any necessary resails taken.
Final Scores
“Blue Peter” John
Brooks Fleetwood 20.5 Top
“Classic”
“Tempest” Alan
Bell Fleetwood 20 Top
“Vintage”
“Maireaid” Lisa
McKerchar Bournville 17
“Sula” Bill
Green Bournville 14
“Bosun’s Mate” Peter
Whiteside Fleetwood 14
“Solveig” Tom
& Hughie Greenock 13
“Gigi” Graham
Reeves Bournville 6.5
The Hayes Trophy was awarded to Alan Bell and the Pearson
Trophy to John Brooks.
Tom MacBeath, Hughie Shields, Graham Reeves and Peter
Whiteside are also members of the Vintage Group.
With such an encouraging entry this year, the Classic &
Vintage weekend has already been scheduled into Fleetwood’s 2012 Sailing
Programme. Many of the skippers attending said they would support a second
Classic & Vintage weekend next year at Fleetwood if this could be arranged.

be a break for lunch around 1-00 pm each day. This evening there will be a
“finger buffet” at the Clubhouse, after sailing has been completed. The buffet
will be free of charge to competitors, officials and guests, but please advise
numbers wishing to attend on the enclosed Social Events form. Bring your own
drinks and glasses.
Monday 1st August – Continuation of Vane “A”
Nationals.
Tuesday 2nd August – Yachting Monthly Cup competition
(all day).
Racing will commence at 09-30 am to the following format, as
successfully used for the last few years at both Gosport and Fleetwood events:
1. The race is for “free sailing” “A” Class yachts which
hold certification to the appropriate rule. The race is open to all ages of
boats. Race entry shall be available to all MYA affiliated skippers and shall
be by pre entry to the host club. Participation is free to all those taking
part in the “A” Nationals 2011, but any others will be charged an entry fee of
£5-00 per boat. Entry to the Y.M. Cup
shall be made in advance under the same notification as the “A” Nationals.
2. Race organisation
will be as follows:
a) In part I) the main fleet will be sub divided into small
fleets and members of each small fleet will race against each other in turn.
The 8 highest scoring yachts from the small fleets will then go through to part
II), the Knock Out competition.
b) Size of the small fleets will be at the discretion of the
Race Officer (R.O.) and each fleet will reflect a representative sample of the
whole entry. Past performance in the last “A” Nationals and other pertinent
events will be used to select fleet members. Each small fleet will be of
similar size.
c) Each competitor in a small fleet shall race each other.
The R.O. shall use his discretion to decide whether the racing is for 2 beats
per heat, or a beat and run. If racing is to be 2 beats, competitors from each
racing pair will start once from each starting station, the first choice being
decided by the spin of a coin. The winner of a beat scores 3 points and the
loser nil. Should both members of a racing pair each win a beat, deciding runs
will not be taken at this stage. If racing is for a beat and a run per heat,
scoring shall be 3 pts for a win to windward and 2 points for a win downwind, 0
points for a loss, as normal.
d) The highest scoring 8 skippers in part I) shall progress to
part II), the Knock Out round. Where ties in scores exist, count back shall be
used and if equal on count back, a sail-off shall be employed.
e) The top 8 skippers, drawing the initial opponents from a
hat, shall start the Knock Out phase, which shall be sailed for on the basis of
2 beats and a deciding run, if required.
f) The winner of the Knock Out phase shall be the winner of
the Y.M. Cup.
g) The Y.M. Cup shall be retained by the winner in
accordance with M.Y.A. trophy conditions.
h) All disputes shall be resolved by reference to the R.O.
and / or Protest Committee drawn from the fleet.
i) M.Y.A. Free Sailing Rules shall apply. |
|

racing is completed on Tuesday evening. The Supper will be free to competitors,
officials and guests.
Please indicate numbers wishing to attend, on the enclosed

“CLASSIC &
VINTAGE” VANE “M” WEEKEND
FLEETWOOD 8TH
& 9TH MAY 10
Skippers journeyed from England, Scotland and Wales to take
part in this annual event, held on the world famous model yacht lake at
Fleetwood. Furthest travelled was Martin Bandey, representing the Gosport Club
and sailing K1218 “Gallivant”, designed in the late 1940’s by Ted Hook of the
USA. Hughie Shields from the Greenock Club brought “Ragtime”, which was
originally of KS registration, but the sails bearing the number had been lost
in the mist of time. Tom MacBeath, also from Greenock Club brought his two
vintage “M” Class yachts and decided to sail KS318 “Maireaid”, a Stan Witty
“Manta” design, on the first day.
Fleetwood members Alan & Margaret Bell had left their
home on Anglesey, hence the Welsh connection, at first light that morning.
Although they are both of Fleetwood origin, they have lived on Anglesey for
about 30 years. They brought Alan’s pride and joy, K1324 “Tempest”, a Charlie
Adams “Foxtrot” design, built for Alan by the designer himself, in 1961. Two
local yachts made up the fleet, Eric Watkinson’s K2807 “Blue Peter”, a Roger
Stollery “Blood Axe” design, regarded as a “Classic” rather than a “Vintage”
design, for the purpose of the event, and my own K1567, “Bosun’s Mate”, a Stan
Witty “Bosun”. She was built in 1967 by my old friend, Wesley Rodrick, who was
born in Glasgow and sailed model yachts there with his father, then moving to
Lancaster and sailing at the Sandylands Lake on Morecambe beach until the
demise of that club around 1960. Wesley then joined Fleetwood Club where he was
Secretary for many years and then finally President until his death a few years
ago.
So we had six yachts at the starting line. The wind was
blowing from the NE and very strong, necessitating the use of small sails. Some
yachts were coping in second suit but others were down in third. Although the
people already mentioned were joined by my sister, Carole, and Hughie’s friend,
Ian, there were not enough people taking part to ensure two per boat. We therefore
decided it would be prudent to have just one pair of yachts racing on the water
at a time so that we could all help each other. Also, as our legs were
definitely “vintage” rather than “classic” (except for the ladies of course),
we agreed not to use spinnakers.
On the run down from the East or Clubhouse end of the lake,
the wind tended to straighten about half way down the lake. Those who had set
their vanes to keep off the lee bank then found their boats climbing up to the
weather bank on the seaward side of the lake. Coming back on the beat it was
generally three legs. Three heats were sailed before lunch, then the final two
to complete the competition were commenced after our refreshment, with the
event finishing around 4-00 pm. At lunchtime Alan revealed it was actually
Margaret’s birthday that day! How many wives would agree to play toy boats in a
gale with their husband on their birthday?
Alan had “Tempest” trimmed to perfection and only lost one
run all day, thereby winning the Walter Jones Trophy. After a poor start Eric
had “Blue Peter” sailing well and tied for second place with Hugh. Eric was the
highest placed “Classic” yacht and received the Mayoral Cup. Martin received a
bottle of wine for having travelled the greatest distance to take part.
Final Scores
1st “Tempest” Alan & Margaret Bell Fleetwood 23 points
2nd = “Blue
Peter” Eric Watkinson Fleetwood 15
2nd = “Ragtime” Hughie Shields Greenock 15
4th “Bosun’s
Mate” Peter Whiteside Fleetwood 10
5th “Maireaid” Tom MacBeath Greenock 7
6th “Gallivant” Martin Bandey Gosport 5
In the evening the competitors who were staying locally
decided to meet at the Fleetwood branch of Wetherspoons, where good food and
real ale were enjoyed. Martin, always the perfect gentleman, arranged a
birthday card and flowers, which he presented to Margaret during the evening.
Sunday 9th May
Only five yachts took part, as Martin had to travel down to
Brighton, to sail a real yacht over to Southampton. Tom decided to sail his
other yacht, K834 “Solvieg”, a Mcdonald “Saida” design. The remainder of the
fleet were as the previous day. Fortunately the wind had moderated with most
skippers choosing a broad top suit of sails. Initially the wind was from the
NE, then changed to NW during heat 4.
Even though there was less wind than the previous day, it
was decided to do without spinnakers, as there were fewer helpers.
A complete round was sailed and the final positions were as
follows:
1st “Bosun’s
Mate” Peter Whiteside Fleetwood 15 points
2nd = “Solveig” Tom MacBeath Greenock 12
2nd = “Tempest” Alan Bell Fleetwood 12
4th “
Blue Peter” Eric Watkinson Fleetwood 10
5th “Ragtime” Hugh Shields Greenock 2
“Bosun’s Mate” won the Hayes Trophy for top “Vintage” and
“Blue Peter” the Pearson Trophy for top “Classic”. Bottles of wine were
presented to each of our Scottish friends in recognition of the long distance
they had travelled to take part.
The weekend was enjoyed by all participants. What a pity
some of the other 40+ people invited did not take part! However, we shall carry
on regardless next year!

Lake Cleaning
We will not be a position to carry out any cleaning of the model yacht lake this year - we will ensure that the licences are in place for us to carry out the works next February. Can you please make your members aware of this; in the meantime we will continue to maintain the water levels within the lake as full as possible. We will not be carrying out similar works to the Boating Lake either, although we are in discussion with them to carry out the works later in the year.

Lake of Sails
On June 7th Fleetwood were due to hold the its annual Lake of Sails Day. Unfortunately due to high winds it was not possible to put the
boats on the lake.
Despite the bad weather we still had a good day inside the club house with raffles, boat exhibits and a hot pot lunch.
Scale Regatta day on Sun July 12th. Well the bad weather struck again with very high winds. We tried to run some of the events on
the second round lake we have at Fleetwood Despite a valiant attempt by some skippers it was only a partial success. We have some
vacant dates later in the year when we will try to run the postponed events.
In July we ran the MYA IOM ranking event Over the w/e of 4/5thJuly. This was rated a success from all who took part both from the
racing and the social events.
In addition to the IOM racing Fleetwood also staged a fun event based on R/C lasers and team racing this was enjoyed by all and
developed into a keen competitive event.
August 1st to the 7th saw the MYA Open Vane National Championships being held at Fleetwood. This was combined with the YW Cup held
on the Wednesday. This proved to be an excellent seven days of sailing with winds ranging from a flat calm to strong winds for a link to
In addition to serious racing we again had social events and the team racing based on R/C lasers this was enjoyed by all and again
developed into a keen competitive event.
( thanks to all the laser skippers who provided loan boats for the two events )
Lake Of Sails day 8th June 2008
This Open club event was well attended with a good turn out of club members and families
Events like this help to raise the awareness of th club within both the local community and visitors to Fleetwood.
The sailing events were once more run by our able Officer of the Day ( OD) Jim Bennet. They consisted of a navigation course a 3 lap timed race, and a ladies navigation course. Part of the sailing events was to pick up a cargo at three points and successfully convey them back, on the boat, to the OD. The difficulty was that the cargo consisted of three tea bags which had to be carried by the boat in a dry condition.
The Club Commodore, Chris Croasdale presented the prizes, The winners of the events were:-

Carl Richardson overall
Winner of the Lake of sails |
Fred Baker won the visitors favorite boat |
Daniel Richardson won the junior’s event |
Patrice Entwistle won the Lady’s event. |

David Smith gave us all a good chuckle with his
union jack shorts though they probably wouldn't’t
pass muster at Cowes week!!
Valerie Smith, Adele Richardson and Silvia Tweedle ran the canteen making sure
we were all well fed, but it was noted that they where reluctant to
sell the chocolate cake! Roy’s cake’s were a hit as always and much
appreciated helping to raise funds for the club.
Trevor Law’s Bring and Buy was popular and seems to be extending every time we have a bring and buy.
The number of visitors was up on previous years with many watching the sailing events and then coming into the club.
I would like to thank everyone who helped and took part in this event and Trevor Savage, Trevor Whitworth and John Hathaway for
the pictures of this event.

Schooner Sailing April /May 2008
Schooner Racing
The schooner season is on us again, this event is well attended on Wednesday afternoons and officiated by Jim Bennet. This class is for multi masted or gaffed rigged sailing vessels. There are three classes determined on length of hull “A” class 55inch and above, “B” 36inch and above and “C” class.
The race lasts for 1 hour and the objective is to put as many laps in as is possible. The winner for each class receives 3 points, 2nd 2 points, 3 1.5 points and 1 point for taking part. This year we are trying four 7 week sailing “seasons” to give more people a chance of winning instead of one long sailing season. During a 7 week season you must stay with the same boat, but the next you are free to try a different boat or carry on with the same one.
Season 1 has now finished with:
Tom Pearsall winning “A” class with “Folly” Dave Smith winning “B” class
Sid Wilson winning “C” class
All boats start for another schooner race
